Minister Humphrey's attends Commemoration events in Glasgow
Minister for Arts, Heritage, and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys participated in UK Government First World War commemoration events in Glasgow on 4 August, accompanied by Consul General Bourne. The programme included a Remembrance Service at Glasgow Cathedral and a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial in George Square, and was followed by a civic reception and lunch hosted by the Lord Provost of Glasgow.
Some 4000 guests attended the events, including the Prince of Wales and senior British politicians.
The ceremonies included many particular references to the role of Ireland and of Irish soldiers in WWI. It was noted that 206,000 Irishmen had gone to war and that some 30,000 had died. An Irish Defence Forces officer also attended and took part in the Cathedral event by lighting a candle as part of the concluding Ceremony of Light.
