Ambassador O'Donoghue attended a major three-day conference which brought together more than 90 Irish Ambassadors, Consul General and senior diplomats, with the Taoiseach, Tánaiste, Government Ministers, as well as the representatives of Irish companies, other Government departments, the State Agencies, third level institutions and the creative sectors in Dublin between 12-14 January 2015, in Dublin Castle. The theme of the conference was 'Representing the Global Island' and was aimed at redoubling efforts by diplomatic missions abroad to support Irish businesses internationally as part of the Government's dive to deepen our economic recovery and increase employment.

Despite the busy conference schedule the Ambassador took the time to visit her Alma Mater University College Cork and held a series of meetings with University officials including Dr Kevin Cawley, Director of the Irish Institute of Korean Studies and coordinator of the MA in Asian Studies at UCC. MA in Asian Studies @ UCC

UCC's unique and broadly conceived taught MA in Asian Studies is designed for graduates who are interested in studying aspects of societies, cultures, languages and the arts across the wider Asian region, but also, depending on their interests and experience, enabling them to focus on a particular country/region, such as Korea. making language study available, but optional, also makes the course appealing to a wider range of students. Removing the previous requirement to spend a substantial period of time in Asia within a fee-paying course should make it more attractive to potential students, including those who have already lived in Asia or intend to visit Asia in the future. This may especially appeal to expats who have been teaching English in Korea and who are looking for the next step to develop themselves and their careers.

This course also serves as a preparatory course for students wishing to undertake a PhD programme in Asian Studies.

Course goals:

To cater for the growing interest in and awareness of Asia in Ireland by providing language and academic study in a range of Asia-related fields.
