Embassy of Ireland, Pretoria wins EU football tournament
The Embassy participated in a football tournament last November, which was organised by the Italian Embassy to mark its Presidency of the European Union. Participating EU Embassies were represented by teams from schools from underprivileged areas in and around Pretoria. Ireland was represented by Chipa Tabane Secondary School. Participants were aged 13 and under.
Ireland won all of its group matches, against Spain, the Netherlands and Austria, without conceding a goal. In the semi finals, the team came through in a tight game against Italy, eventually winning 2-0.
In the final, Ireland again faced up to Austria once again. A very tense game ended 0-0 after full time and so the tournament was decided on penalties. Ireland eventually won 2-1, thanks mainly to our goalkeeper who was also named player of the tournament.
The team, ably managed by Teacher/Coach Mr. Hosea Digashu and School Principal Mr. Selaki Masenya, represented Ireland with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship. They looked splendid in their Ireland kit, which was provided by the Embassy.
It is hoped that the tournament, which proved to be a great success, will be held on an annual basis, and that the Embassy will have the opportunity to defend its hard won title. The Embassy of Italy, in particular Alessandro Costa, deserves a big "thank you" for organising this event which was enjoyed by players and spectators alike.
