The Irish Consulate hosted its inaugural St Brigid’s Day celebration on February 1, 2019.
The event celebrated the role of Irish and Irish-American women in Texas and included performances by the Inisfree School of Irish Dance, violinist Niamh Fahy and harpist Cleónagh Carey.
As part of the event, we were delighted to showcase a digital version of the Irish-American subjects from the new ‘Blazing a Trail: Lives and Legacies of Irish Diaspora Women’ exhibition. The exhibition was originally launched at the EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum in Dublin in November 2018 and will travel to various Irish embassies and consulates in the coming years. This exhibition was supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Ireland.
The celebration also included a reading of the poem ‘Our future will become the past of other women’ which was written by Irish poet Eavan Boland. The poem, which was read by members of the Irish community, was published in December 2018 and marks 100 years since Irish women cast their ballots in the 1918 election.
This event was supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade's Global Irish division.
