30 September 2020We were proud to host the inaugural online “Irish Community in Wales” gathering on September 30, 2020. This event was the first in a series that the Consulate plans to host with and for the many Irish people, groups and communities in Wales. We are keen to hear your suggestions and views for future events.
We were delighted to be joined in conversation by Minister for the Diaspora, Mr Colm Brophy TD, who spoke about the Irish Government’s diaspora policy and programmes. Rosie Keane, from Embassy of Ireland, Great Britain shared an update on the post-Brexit situation for Irish citizens resident in Wales. Dr Rick Lines of the South Wales Uilleann Pipers provided excellent musical entertainment, performing two South-Wales themed Irish hornpipes compositions. Uilleann piping has been recognised by UNESCO as part of intangible cultural heritage, and the South Wales Uilleann Pipers are working hard to promote the tradition.
To round off the night, Dr Paul Foley, Chair of GAA Britain, informed us about the recent growth of GAA clubs around Wales. Dr Foley noted the importance of clubs for strengthening connections and physical & mental health in these unusual and challenging months.
A recent sporting highlight was when students from St Joseph’s Swansea had the opportunity to play in Croke Park in Dublin during the half-time event at the iconic All-Ireland Final. You can watch their fantastic adventure HERE
