16 March 2021Slovenia will join Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening 2021
Five municipalities across Slovenia - Ljubljana, Bled, Dobrova–Polhov Gradec, Škofja Loka and Rogaška Slatina – have joined in the Global Greening initiative. The Slovenian buildings and sites are lighting up in green to mark Ireland’s national day and to celebrate their connection with Ireland, as well as a symbol of hope and connection at this time.
The annual Global Greening initiative started in 2010, with the Sydney Opera House and the Sky Tower in Auckland 'going green' and this year will be the most ambitious ever Global Greening. Around 670 sites in 66 different countries are signed up to take part for 2021. From Rome to Rio and from London to Las Vegas, and a host of famous buildings and sites around the world will be turning a shade of green this week. The Butchers' Bridge, Ljubljana

The Butchers' Bridge, built in 2010, is a footbridge crossing the river Ljubljanica. It is Ljubljana's love bridge. It is a place where countless lovers have symbolically padlocked their love and dropped the keys into the river Ljubljanica, which flows underneath.

Bled Castle, Bled

In terms of written documents, Bled Castle is the oldest castle in Slovenia, first mentioned in 1011. Perched atop a steep cliff rising 130 metres above the glacial Lake Bled a symbol of Bled and Slovenia. The fame of Bled and its beauties was spread around the world by world travellers, including Janez Vajkard Valvasor and his Glory of the Duchy of Carniola of 1689.

Square below Škofja Loka Castle, Škofja Loka

Škofja Loka is an authentic medieval town with the picturesque streets in the vicinity of Ljubljana. The name Škofja Loka literally means 'bishop's (wet) meadow', referring to its ownership by the Bishops of Freising dating back to medieval history. It is home to the Škofja Loka Passion Play, the oldest Slovene drama from 1721 and the largest outdoor theatre production. During the time of the Passion Play, visitors to the town can become a part of the staging of the play, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The Škofja Loka area is dotted with numerous castles and mansions. The earliest date back to the 13th century. There is a wealth of history and legends amongst them.

The Capuchin Bridge, Škofja Loka

This bridge over the Selca Sora river, built in the mid-14th century from carved stone in a semi-circular shape, is the only one of its kind in central Europe. In 1888 it was renovated and equipped with iron railings. In the centre there is a statue of St. John of Nepomuk, with the Škofja Loka coat-of-arms on the plinth. In the Middle Ages the Selca Gate with a guard tower stood beside the bridge.

Municipality Building, Rogaška Slatina

Rogaška Slatina is a town in eastern Slovenia. It is health and spa resort with more than 400 years of tradition. The name Rogaška Slatina literally means 'Rogatec springs', referring to a source of mineral water. Awarded as Slovenia Green Destination place with the unique mineral water Donat Mg, that contains more magnesium than any other water in the world. Rogaška Slatina is also known as a place of glass production Rogaška Glassworks and beauty Cosmetics. The green heart of Rogaška Slatina is park and its promenade located between Secession buildings.

Polhov Gradec Mansion, Polhov Gradec

The Polhov Gradec Mansion which dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries acquired most of its present look in the baroque period. Count Blagaj, an enlightened Mecean of art and a botanist after whom the protected plant Blagajev volĨin (spurge laurel) was named lived here in the 19th century.
