Welcome to the Consulate General’s August newsletter. We hope you’ve been keeping well and are enjoying the summer so far. 

In this issue, you can read about our activities in July and learn more about our upcoming events. 

Last week, we said farewell to Deputy Consul General Patrick McDonagh. Patrick has been a fantastic colleague and we wish him the very best of luck with his new role in Dublin. We look forward to welcoming our new Deputy Consul General Aaron Reen to Frankfurt next week. 

Last month saw us attend a variety of events in Mainz, Wiesbaden, Dausenau and Hanau. We were delighted to partner with the Goethe University in Frankfurt for a talk with Dr Maebh Long on the topic of 'Eironeisa: Irish Islands and Pacific Waters'. We were also excited to participate in the famous annual Grüne Soße Festival in Frankfurt. 

We are counting down the days until the second Frankfurt Irish Festival on 10 September and hope you, your family and friends will join us on the day. You can find more information in the events section below!

Go Wald & Scott Fest - Mainz University, 7 July 

The Consulate was delighted to participate in the Go Wald Progamme and 2023 Scott Fest organised by the Scotland Hub at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. 

The Go Wald programme involves a week of interdisciplinary academic talks at the University and a week-long trip to the Pfälzerwald giving students from Ireland’s NUI Galway, Scotland and Germany the opportunity to work together on projects related to climate change.

Celebrating Frankfurt-Irish connections at the Grüne Soße Festival, 14 July 

Consul General Anne-Marie Flynn attended the annual Frankfurt Grüne Soße Festival on 14 July.

The festival celebrated Frankfurt-Irish links, drawing parallels between the beautiful ‘Grüne Insel’ of Ireland and Frankfurt’s famous Grüne Soße.  

Irish folk band The Reparees gave a fantastic performance on the main stage. Many thanks to CEO Eric Menges and the whole team at Frankfurt RheinMain Marketing for inviting Ireland to be part of the festivities. 

Hanau Summer Festival - Irish Folk Festival, 17 July        

​Deputy Consul General Patrick McDonagh attended the Irish Folk Festival on 17 July, which formed part of the 2023 Hanau Summer Festival. 

There was a fantastic display of Irish music from The Rapperees, 3 on the bund, and Siolta. 

Dr. Maebh Long Talk - Goethe University Frankfurt, 24 July 

The Consulate was delighted to support a talk by Irish academic, Dr. Maebh Long at the Goethe University in Frankfurt on 24 July. 

Dr. Long is a senior lecturer in English at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. Her talk focused on the topic of 'Eironeisa: Irish Islands and Pacific Waters' and was organised by Dr. John Greaney, an Irish academic working at the Goethe University. 

Attendance at Aktemächertag in Dausenau, 26 July 

At the invitation of Irish-born mayor Michelle Wittler, Consul General Flynn travelled to Dausenau to join in the town’s annual Aktemächertag celebrations last week.  

The Aktemächertag celebrates the citizens of Dausenau that contribute to the town's society and culture through voluntary work each year.  CG Flynn thanked the volunteers who organised Dausenau's first St Patrick's Day Festival in March.

📢 Save the Date! Frankfurt Irish Festival, 10 September 

The Frankfurt Irish Festival is back by popular demand! 

We, along with our German and Irish community partners and sponsors, invite you, your family and friends to join us on Sunday 10 September from 11am – 4pm. The Festival will take place at the Eintracht Rugby Grounds in Nied, and will include the very best of Irish music, dance, sport, food and drink.

Into Europe: Ireland & the EU 1973-2023 Exhibition in Wetzlar, 08 August 

The Consulate is delighted to partner with the Stadtbibliothek Wetzlar to showcase our ‘Into Europe: Ireland & the EU 1973-2023’ exhibition from 08 August.

The exhibition explores the impact EU membership has had on Ireland from many different perspectives.

Irish Business Network Stammtisch, 31 August 

A reminder that the Irish Business Network’s monthly Stammtisch will take place in Waxy’s Irish Pub on Thursday 31 August.
