Welcome to the Consulate General’s July newsletter. We hope you’ve been keeping well and are making the most of the fine weather we are enjoying at the moment. 

In this issue, you can read about our activities in June and learn more about our upcoming events. Last month saw us organise the third instalment of our EU50 Financial Seminar Series in the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management on the topic of ‘Financing Europe’s Sustainable Future’. We also continued with our EU50 school tour presentations throughout Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate and began the tour of our EU50 travelling exhibition in Mainz. 

As you might have seen on our social media, we are really looking forward to hosting the second Frankfurt Irish Festival on 10 September and hope you will join us on the day.  You can find more information in the events section below! 

The Consulate is currently recruiting for an Accounts Officer/Administrator. The deadline for receipt of applications is 16:30 (local time) on 18 July. Check out the updated job spec on our website. Ireland Briefing for CDU Party Group in Rhineland-Palatinate State Parliament, 14 June 

Consul General Anne-Marie Flynn travelled to the state parliament in Mainz and delivered a briefing on Ireland to the CDU parliamentary group on 14 June, ahead of their study visit to Ireland at the end of the month. 

In her briefing, she discussed the political system, economy and trade links, energy policy, EU engagement, Brexit and EU50 and our broader foreign policy, as well as links between Ireland and Rhineland-Palatinate. 

Team Ireland at the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge Frankfurt, 14 June 

The Consulate was delighted to join colleagues from the IDA and Team Ireland in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge in Frankfurt on 14 June. 

A great evening was had by all with personal bests all round! 

Bloomsday Celebrations in Hesse, 16 June 

To mark Bloomsday 2023 the Consulate partnered with Frankfurt City Library to display our travelling James Joyce exhibition and host our monthly Book Club, which met to discuss ‘Idol’ by Louise O’Neill. As part of the event, the Consulate also showed the newly commissioned short film 'YES I WILL YES' . 

In Friedberg, Consul General Flynn attended the annual Bloomsday celebration of the German-Irish Friendship Society in Friedberg, which celebrated its 30th year this year. The event included readings from Finnegan's Wake and a presentation of Joyce's biography from Dr. Volker Braun and Honorary President of the Society Karl Buxmann, as well as performances of Joyce-related songs from soprano Kristina Schaum. 

Financing Europe’s Sustainable Future: Views from Frankfurt and Dublin, 20 June 

The Consulate hosted the third event in our EU50 Financial Events Series on 20 June on the theme of 'Financing Europe's Sustainable Future: Views from Finance and Dublin'. 

The Consulate organised this event in conjunction with IDA Ireland, the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, the Green and Sustainable Finance Cluster Germany, Net Zero Banking Alliance Germany and Frankfurt Rhein Main Marketing. 

We would like to sincerely thank our panellists and the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management for hosting this event. 

Into Europe: Ireland & the EU 1973-2023 Exhibition in Mainz, 26 June – 22 July 

As part of the Consulate's programme of events to mark EU50, we travelled to Mainz for the launch of the EU50 exhibition, 'Into Europe: Ireland and the EU 1973-2023' at the Landeszentre für politische Bildung. 

The exhibition will remain in Mainz until the end of July before moving to Wetzlar. Keep an eye of our social media channels for details of other locations! 

The Consulate also continued our EU50 school outreach this month. We would like to thank the staff and students of Theodor-Heuss-Schule in Wetzlar, Maria Ward Schule, Gymnasium Oberstadt, Otto Schott Gymnasium, and Theresianum in Mainz, Elisabeth Langgässer Gymnasium and Eleonoren Gymnasium in Worms and Integrierte Gesamtschule Landau for such a warm welcome and their interest in Ireland. 

EU Consular Corps briefing with Hessen Minister for European Affairs Lucia Puttrich, 26 June 

​Consul General Flynn attended a briefing for members of the EU consular corps hosted by Hesse's Minister for European Affairs Lucia Puttrich. 

The visit took place at the Dienstvilla of the Hessen Minister President in Wiesbaden and was also attended by the State Secretary for European Affairs Uwe Becker.   

Deutsch-irisches Liedtreffen, 28 June 

The Consulate supported the organisation of the German premiere of the Deutsch-irisches Liedtreffen at the Goethe-Haus in Frankfurt on 28 June. 

The event saw Irish pianist Niall Kinsella and Irish soprano Amy Ní Fhearraigh perform a number of Irish and German songs. 

Thank you to everyone who attended and to Irish classical music expert, Dr. Axel Klein, for organising the event. 

Germany Rose of Tralee Selection at the Schlossfest Höchst, 1 July 

The Consulate was delighted to attend the Germany Rose of Tralee selection at the annual Schlossfest in Höchst. 

There was a great display of Irish music and dancing throughout the day. 

Congratulations to Megan Wolf from Tübingen who was selected to represent Germany in the Rose of Tralee Festival in August!

📢 Save the Date! Frankfurt Irish Festival, 10 September 

The Frankfurt Irish Festival is back by popular demand! 

We, along with our German and Irish community partners and sponsors, invite you, your family and friends to join us on Sunday 10 September from 11am – 4pm. The Festival will take place at the Eintracht Rugby Grounds in Nied, and will include the very best of Irish music, dance, sport, food and drink.

Talk with Dr. Maedh Long: Eironeisa: Irish Islands and Pacific Waters, 24 July 

The Consulate and the Goethe University Frankfurt invite you to attend a talk with Dr. Maedh Long and Dr John Greaney on the topic “Eironeisa: Irish Islands and Pacific Waters”. 

The event will take place on Monday 24 July from 6pm in the Eisenhower Saal in the Goethe University Frankfurt. 

The talk will be followed by a Q&A with Dr. John Greaney and a reception.    

Irish Business Network Stammtisch, 27 July 

A reminder that the Irish Business Network’s monthly Stammtisch will take place in Waxy’s Irish Pub on Thursday 27 July.

Into Europe: Ireland & the EU 1973-2023 Exhibition in Wetzlar, 08 August  

The Consulate is delighted to partner with the Stadtbibliothek Wetzlar to showcase our ‘Into Europe: Ireland & the EU 1973-2023’ exhibition from 08 August. 

The exhibition explores the impact EU membership has had on Ireland from many different perspectives.
