Welcome to the Consulate General’s June newsletter. We hope you’ve been keeping well and are making the most of the fine weather we are enjoying at the moment.
In this issue, you can read about our activities in May and learn more about our upcoming events.
May saw the Consulate team out and about celebrating Europe-Week, EU50, GAA, Theatre as well as a number of events organised by our state agency partners, and much more. A huge thanks and well done to everyone for their commitment, dedication and support in promoting Ireland and Irish culture over the past few weeks. The Consulate is also currently recruiting for the role of Accounts Officer/Administrator. If you speak German and English, like working with people and as part of a team, have experience in accounts, administration and social media management, then we would love to hear from you! Further information about the role and application process is available here. The deadline for receipt of applications is 6th June!
Finally, we would like to wish all the Irish athletes taking part in the 2023 Special Olympics in Berlin from 17-24 June all the best.

Visit of Minister Paschal Donohoe to Frankfurt, 24 May
We were delighted to welcome Minister Donohoe back to Frankfurt on 24 May to attend an event marking the 25th anniversary of the European Central Bank in his role of President of the Eurogroup.
The event was hosted by ECB President Christine Lagarde at the ECB Main Building.

Ireland EU50 School Presentations
As part of the Consulate’s EU50 programme of events and Europe Day, we travelled to a number of schools in Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse in May to discuss 50 years of Ireland’s membership in the European Union.
We would like to thank the staff and students of Heinrich Heine Gymnasium in Kaiserslautern, Reichswald Gymnasium in Ramstein, Liebigschule in Frankfurt and Weidigschule in Butzbach for such a warm welcome and their interest in Ireland.

Enterprise Ireland Data Centre World Reception in Frankfurt, 10 May
Consul General Anne-Marie Flynn spoke at a networking reception organised by Enterprise Ireland to coincide with the annual Data Centre World trade fair in Frankfurt.
The reception brought together Irish companies working in the area of advanced construction and their German partners, and to reflect on the strength of Irish expertise in the sector.

LGBT+ Rights Activism in Ireland: 50 Years of Activism & EU Membership - IDAHOBIT 2023
To mark International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, Deputy Consul General Patrick McDonagh delivered a talk on 'LGBT+ Rights Activism in Ireland: 50 Years of Activism & EU membership'.
The event was organised by the European System of Central Banks, European Supervisory Authorities, the Single Supervisory Mechanism and the European Insurance and Occupational Persons Authority.

Europa-Fest Frankfurt: “Europe is Yours”, 19 May
The Consulate was delighted to participate in the first 'Europa-Fest: Europe is Yours' in Frankfurt on 19 May as part of the Paulskirchenfest. It was wonderful to see so many visit the Consulate’s stall and engage with our EU50 exhibition, ‘Into Europe: Ireland and the EU 1973-2023’.
Consul General Anne-Marie Flynn also participated in a meet&greet with Eileen O'Sullivan, Head of the Department for Digitalisation, Citizen Services, Participation and EU Affairs in the City of Frankfurt am Main.
A huge thanks also to Enbarr’s Flight for showcasing the best of traditional Irish music on the Europa-Fest main stage. Check out our event highlight reel here.

Meet in Ireland IMEX Networking Reception, 24 May
Deputy Consul General Patrick McDonagh attended a networking reception organised by Meet in Ireland to coincide with their participation at the IMEX Frankfurt Fair from 23-25 May.
The networking reception brought together Irish suppliers and representatives from destination marketing companies to sample the best of Irish hospitality.

Annual Irish Business Network Golf Tournament and Beginners Course, 26 May
Consul General Anne-Marie Flynn was delighted to support the Irish Business Network’s Annual Golf Tournament and Beginners Course, which returned to Golfpark Winnerod on 26 May 2023 with over 80 participants taking part.
Well done to everyone who took part and congratulations to the winners. Many thanks to our friends in the Irish Business Network for organising yet another fantastic tournament.

Contemporary Modernism Conference Goethe University Frankfurt, 26 May
Deputy Consul General Patrick McDonagh delivered opening remarks ahead of a keynote address by Professor John Brannigan at a Contemporary Modernism conference organised at Goethe University Frankfurt, which ran from 25-27 May.
The conference was organised by Dr. John Greaney, an Irish academic working at the Goethe University Frankfurt, and provided a unique opportunity to reflect on Contemporary Modernism and the role and impact of Irish writers.

Festival of European Anglophone Theatrical Societies (FEATS) 2023, 26 – 29 May
A huge congratulations to the Frankfurt English Speaking Theatre on the organisation of the 2023 Festival of European Anglophone Theatrical Societies (FEATS) at the Kurtheater in Bad Homburg. The organising committee had a strong Irish contingent involved, including Amanda Ife who was the Chairwoman of the FEATS 2023 Organising Committee.
Well done to all involved on the organisation of a great festival.

European Youth Gaelic Football Tournament 2023, 28 May
Our friends at Eintracht Frankfurt GAA hosted the European Gaelic Football Youth Tournament (ages from 6 to 15) for the first time at the Eintracht Rugby & GAA ground in Nied.
This was the largest youth football tournament to take place in Europe to date.
It was great to see such fantastic displays of football throughout the day. Well done to all the players who travelled from The Hague, Brussels, Amsterdam, Basel and Luxembourg to take part and especially to Eintracht Frankfurt GAA for organising such a great day!

Upcoming Events
Celtic Folk Music event, German-Irish Society Friedberg, 10 June
The German-Irish Society in Friedberg are organising a Celtic folk music event on 10 June at the Naturbühne in Friedberg.
There will be a performance by Stirling Bridge, who will perform a mix of Celtic songs from Ireland and Scotland, along with a few classic Rock and Pop songs.

Book Club, 16 June
Thank you to everyone who came along to our May Book Club, when we discussed Donal Ryan’s The Queen of Dirt Island. Great to see some new faces joining.
We have an exciting announcement regarding our June Book Club – The Bloomsday Edition, which will be the last one before the summer holidays. We will meet in the Zentralbibliothek in Frankfurt on 16 June to discuss Idol by Louise O’Neill. Our James Joyce Ulysses exhibition will also be on display in celebration of Bloomsday.

Bloomsday Celebrations, German-Irish Society Friedberg, 16 June
Our friends at the German-Irish Society in Friedberg are holding their annual Bloomsday reading event on 16 June.
The society will put together a "best-of" from James Joyce's Ulysses and bring some of Leopold Bloom's experiences from 16 June 1904 to life.
The event kicks off at 8pm in the Theatre altes Hallenbad, Kesselhaus in Friedberg. You can find further information here.

Financing Europe’s Sustainable Future: Views from Frankfurt and Dublin, 20 June
As the European economy continues its journey towards carbon neutrality private financing from Europe’s banks and capital markets will be critical in supporting the green transition and enabling us to reach net zero by 2050. But how can we best achieve this?
Join us for a discussion on best practice in advancing the sustainable finance agenda with leading Irish and German policymakers, regulators and industry experts.
The event will be moderated by Prof Karsten Loeffler of the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management and is delivered in partnership with the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management, Net Zero Banking Alliance Germany, Frankfurt Rhein Main and IDA Ireland.

Into Europe: Ireland & the EU 1973-2023 Exhibition in Mainz, 26 June – 22 July
The Consulate is delighted to partner with the Landeszentrale für politische Bildung in Rhineland-Palatinate to showcase our ‘Into Europe: Ireland & the EU 1973-2023’ exhibition, which explores the impact EU membership has had on Ireland from many different perspectives.
The exhibition consists of twelve panels and covers topics such as the economy, gender equality, peace, the single market, and agriculture, amongst others.

Deutsch-irisches Liedtreffen, 28 June
The Consulate is excited to be supporting a unique performance of German and Irish songs and poetry from the Romantic period to present day at the Goethehaus on the 28 June.
German poetry by Goethe, Eichendorff, Heine and Nietzsche will be read along with music by Irish composers such as Arthur O'Leary, Charles V. Stanford, Mary Dickenson-Auner and Seóirse Bodley. Irish poetry by Thomas Moore, Gerald Griffin and Micheál Ó Murchú will then be read and combined with music by German composers such as Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Friedrich von Flotow, Martin Roeder and Aloys Fleischmann.
The event takes place from 7.30 pm in the Goethehaus, Arkadensaal, Großer Hirschgraben 23-25, 60311 Frankfurt and will feature musical performances by Amy Ní Fhearraigh (Soprano) and Niall Kinsella (piano). More information on the event is available here.

The Frankfurt Irish Festival is back by popular demand!
We, along with our German and Irish community partners and sponsors, invite you, your family and friends to join us on Sunday 10 September. The Festival will take place at the Eintracht Rugby Grounds in Nied, and will include the very best of Irish music, dance, sport, food and drink.
