New Consulate General of Ireland office in Frankfurt

17 October 2019On his first official visit to Frankfurt today, the Ambassador of Ireland to the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Nicholas O’Brien, visited the new Consulate General of Ireland office in Frankfurt, headed by the recently-appointed Consul General Mr John Lynam.
The opening of this career consulate, the first on mainland Europe, highlights the importance of the relationship between Ireland and Germany, and follows the very successful State Visit to Germany, including Frankfurt, by President Michael D. Higgins last July.
The opening of the office is part of Ireland’s expansion of its diplomatic network under the “Global Ireland” initiative. The Consulate in Frankfurt has a governmental and economic focus and will play an important role in supporting the strengthening and deepening of the existing relationships between Ireland and the federal states of Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland.
During the visit, the Ambassador and the Consul General met with a number of political leaders including the Europe Minister Lucia Puttrich from the Hesse State Government and the Mayor and Treasurer of Frankfurt Uwe Becker. He also met with members of the Irish community, business leaders and the media.
Speaking in Dublin, Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade said: “Building on the very successful visit to Frankfurt in July by President Michael D. Higgins, the opening of this new office is a great moment in the history of our diplomatic relations with Germany. Ireland’s global footprint is being expanded at pace with Frankfurt now the 90th diplomatic mission in our network and the 10th new mission since the launch of the Global Ireland Strategy. Our diplomatic network of Embassies and Consulates is a vital asset for us as we navigate the rapidly-changing global environment and diversify our trade.”
Speaking in Frankfurt, Ambassador O’Brien said
“I am delighted that Ireland’s Consulate General in Frankfurt is now open to the public and I welcome John Lynam, the new Consul General, and Vice Consul Niall Farrell as part of Team Ireland in Germany. Ireland and Germany have a very deep relationship, and the Consulate will play an important role in maintaining and further building on these ties, at all levels. It will work closely in promoting Irish exports and services with the Frankfurt offices of IDA Ireland and Tourism Ireland, as well as the Düsseldorf offices of Enterprise Ireland and Bord Bia. I would like to thank the German Government and the administrations in Hesse and Frankfurt am Main for their support, most especially during the recent State visit when President Michael D. Higgins marked the opening of the Consulate during his visit to Frankfurt.”
The new Consul General John Lynam said
“I am proud and delighted to take up the role of Consul General in Frankfurt at this important moment in the relationship between our two countries. I first visited the Hessian towns of Fulda and Schlitz on a school exchange in 1994, and 25 years later my team and I look forward to getting to know Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and their people better, and to working to support the varied and vibrant links which already exist between our two countries.”
Neues irisches Generalkonsulat in Frankfurt
Während seines ersten heutigen offiziellen Besuchs in Frankfurt hat der irische Botschafter in Deutschland, Dr. Nicholas O’Brien, das neue Generalkonsulat von Irland besucht, das von dem kürzlich ernannten Generalkonsul Mr John Lynam geleitet wird.
Die Eröffnung des Konsulats, dem ersten auf dem europäischen Festland, unterstreicht die Bedeutung der Beziehungen zwischen Irland und Deutschland und schließt an den sehr erfolgreichen Staatsbesuch von Präsident Michael D. Higgins in Deutschland und Frankfurt im Juli letzten Jahres an.
Die Eröffnung des Büros ist Teil von Irlands Ausbau des diplomatischen Netzwerks im Rahmen der „Global Ireland – Initiative“. Der Fokus des Konsulats in Frankfurt wird auf staatliche und wirtschaftliche Belange ausgerichtet sein und eine wichtige Rolle bei der Stärkung und Vertiefung der bestehenden Beziehungen zwischen Irland und den Bundesländern Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz und dem Saarland spielen.
Während des Besuchs trafen der Botschafter und Generalkonsul eine Reihe Politiker, einschließlich der Europaministerin Lucia Puttrich von der Hessischen Staatskanzlei und des Bürgermeisters und Stadtkämmerers von Frankfurt, Uwe Becker. Es kam außerdem zu einem Treffen mit Mitgliedern der irischen Gemeinde, führenden Unternehmern und der Presse.
In seiner Rede in Dublin sagte der stellvertretende Premierminister und Außenminister Simon Coveney TD:

Higgins in Frankfurt im Juli stellt die Eröffnung des neuen Konsulats einen bedeutenden Moment in der Geschichte unserer diplomatischen Beziehungen mit Deutschland dar. Irlands weltweiter Fußabdruck dehnt sich zügig aus, und umfasst jetzt mit Frankfurt die neunzigste diplomatische Vertretung in unserem Netzwerk und die zehnte neue Vertretung seit der Einführung unserer „Global Ireland-Strategie“. Unser diplomatisches Netzwerk aus Botschaften und Konsulaten ist von entscheidender Bedeutung, da wir uns in einer sich schnell verändernden Welt bewegen, die auch Einfluß auf unsere Handelsbeziehungen hat.“
In seiner Rede in Frankfurt betronte Botschafter O’Brien wie folgt:
„Ich freue mich sehr über die Eröffnung des irischen Generalkonsulats in Frankfurt und begrüße John Lynam, den neuen Generalkonsul, und den Vizekonsul Niall Farrell als Teil des irischen Teams in Deutschland. Zwischen Irland und Deutschland besteht eine sehr enge Beziehung, und das Konsulat wird eine wichtige Rolle bei der Aufrechterhaltung und dem weiteren Ausbau dieser Verbindungen auf allen Ebenen spielen. Es wird eng mit den Büros von IDA Ireland und Tourism Ireland in Frankfurt sowie denm Büros von Enterprise Ireland und Bord Bia in Düsseldorf bei der Förderung irischer Exporte und Dienstleistungen zusammenarbeiten. Ich möchte mich bei der deutschen Regierung und den Behörden in Hessen und Frankfurt am Main für deren Unterstützung bedanken, im Besonderen während des letzten Staatsbesuchs von Präsident Michael D. Higgings, der die Eröffnung des Konsulats im Rahmen seines Besuchs in Frankfurt hervorhob.“
Der neue Generalkonsul John Lynam sagte:
"Ich bin stolz und freue mich sehr auf die Aufgabe, die mir als Generalkonsul in Frankfurt zu diesem wichtigen Zeitpunkt in den Beziehungen zwischen unseren beiden Ländern zukommt. Ich habe die hessischen Städte Fulda und Schlitz das erste Mal im Rahmen eines Schulaustauschs im Jahr 1994 besucht, und 25 Jahre später freuen sich mein Team und ich, Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz und das Saarland und deren Bewohner besser kennenzulernen und dazu beizutragen, die vielfältigen und lebendigen Beziehungen, die bereits zwischen unseren beiden Ländern bestehen, zu festigen."

During the State visit to Germany of President Michael D. Higgins in July, a reception hosted in cooperation with Tourism Ireland took place to mark the opening of the new Consulate General, at which over 300 members of the Irish community and key political and business contacts attended.
During his speech then the President said:
“Opening our new Consulate General in Frankfurt is an important statement of our wish to create new and strong links between our modern, dynamic, open and diverse country and the business, academic and cultural community here in Frankfurt and beyond”
The importance of Frankfurt in the Ireland-Germany relationship was underlined in the Irish Government’s review, Ireland in Germany, A Wider and Deeper Footprint, completed last year at the instigation of the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney, T.D.
Frankfurt is the home of the European Central Bank which has a large contingent of Irish working there, including Philip Lane - Ireland’s first member of the ECB’s Executive Board and ECB Chief Economist.
Germany is a major market for Ireland;
- Total Ireland-German trade (incl. services) = €37 bn (€22 bn in exports; €15 bn in imports)
- our 3rd largest tourist market (850,000 German visitors in 2018)
- our 4th largest merchandise goods trading partner (exports €10 bn; imports €8 bn)
- our 5th largest export market for food and drink (€733m)
- 94 German companies employ 13,700 people in Ireland
- 90th anniversary of Irish German diplomatic relations
In 2018, the Hessian economic authorities estimated two-way trade flows between Ireland and Hessen of €1.8 billion. Hessian investment in Ireland stands at €1.6 billion with firms engaged in financial services, chemicals and software development. Irish companies have directly and indirectly invested €4.8 billion in Hessen. There are 56 flights weekly from Frankfurt International airport to Irish destinations.
Over the lifetime of the Global Ireland initiative, Ireland will open at least 26 new diplomatic missions and strengthen its existing diplomatic network. Since the initiative was launched last year, Ireland has opened new Embassies in Wellington, Bogotá, Amman, Monrovia and Santiago de Chile, and new Consulates General in Vancouver, Mumbai, Cardiff, Los Angeles and now Frankfurt.
The expansion will continue with Embassies in Kyiv, Manila and Rabat.

Die Bedeutung, die Frankfurt in den irisch-deutschen Beziehungen zukommt, wurde in dem Report der irischen Regierung „Ireland in Germany, A Wider and Deeper Footprint“, der im letzten Jahr auf Veranlassung des Tánaiste und Außen- und Wirtschaftsministers Simon Coveney TD abgeschlossen wurde, betont.
Frankfurt ist das Zuhause der Europäischen Zentralbank, die viele Iren beschäftigt, einschließlich Philip Lane, der als erster Ire Mitglied des EZB-Rates und Chefvolkswirt der EZB ist.
Deutschland zählt für Irland zu den wichtigsten Märkten:

Für das Jahr 2018 beziffern hessische Wirtschaftsbehörden das gegenseitige Handelsvolumen zwischen Irland und Hessen mit 1.8 Milliarden Euro. So hat Hessen 1.6 Milliarden Euro in Irland mit Hilfe von Unternehmen im Bereich Finanzdienstleistungen, Chemie und in der Softwareentwicklung investiert. Irische Firmen haben 4.8 Milliarden Euro in Hessen, direkt oder indirekt, investiert. Es gibt 56 Flugverbindungen in der Woche zwischen dem internationalen Flughafen in Frankfurt und Irland.
Im Zuge der Global Ireland – Initiative wird Irland mindestens 26 neue diplomatische Vertretungen eröffnen und das bestehende diplomatische Netzwerk weiter ausbauen. Seit Beginn der Initiative im letzten Jahr hat Irland neue Botschaften in Wellington, Bogota, Amman, Monrovia und Santiago de Chile sowie neue Generalkonsulate in Vancouver, Mumbai, Cardiff, Los Angeles und jetzt in Frankfurt eröffnet.
